WHAT IS A COOKIE?

A cookie is an inoffensive text file that your browser saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. It enables the website to remember your actions and preferences over a period of time, so you don’t have to keep re-entering them whenever you come back to the site or browse from one page to another. Although people don’t know it, cookies have been used for more than 20 years, when the first browsers appeared for the World Wide Web.

WHAT A COOKIE IS NOT?

It is not a virus; it is not a Trojan; it is not a worm; it is not spam; nor it is spyware, nor does it open pop-ups.

WHAT INFORMATION DOES A COOKIE STORE?

Cookies do not usually sore sensitive information about you, such as credit card or banking information, photocopies, your ID number or personal information. The information saves is technical in nature, such as your personal preferences, the personalization of contents, etc.

The web server is not associated with you as a person, but rather your web browser. In fact, if you usually use Internet Explorer and try another browser such as Firefox or Chrome, you will notice that the web does not realize that you are the same person, as it is associated with the browser, not the person.

WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES ARE THERE?

  • Technical Cookies: They are the most elemental; among other aspects, these differentiate between a human user and an automatic application, when the user       is a registered or anonymous user, and other basic tasks for the operations of any          dynamic web site.
  • Analytical Cookies: These collect information about the type of search performed, the most used sections, products consulted, timeframe, language, etc.
  • Publicity Cookies: These offer publicity based on an individual’s search, country of origin, language, etc.

WHAT ARE ONE’S OWN VS. THIRD-PARTY COOKIES?

Our own cookies are generated by the web site you are visiting while third-party cookies are generated by the external services or suppliers, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

WHAT HAPPENS IF i DELETE THE COOKIES?

To understand the scope of events when you delete cookies, here are a few examples:

  • You won’t be able to share the content of that web site on Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.
  • The web site will not be able to adapt the contents to your personal preferences, as is the case with online stores.
  • You will not be able to access the personal area of that web site, such as My Account, or My profile or My orders.
  • Online Shopping: It would be impossible for you to shop online; you would have to phone in your order or go directly to the store, if that store is    geographically available.
  • You would not be able to personalize your geographic preferences such as time zone, currency or language.
  • The web site could not perform web analysis regarding visits and web traffic, which hinder the competitiveness of the web site.
  • You would not be able to write in the blog, upload pictures, publish comments, assess or score contents. The web site would not know if you are a human or an      automatic application publishing spam.
  • You would not be able to show sectored publicity, which would reduce income from web site publicity.
  • All social networks use cookies; if you delete these, you will be unable to use any social network.
